The city was founded on 04 February 1970 to serve the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Some 47,000 people of the city of Prypyat were evacuated after the explosion on 26 April 1986. The explosion of Unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the early hours of 26 April 1986 is still regarded as the biggest accident in the history of nuclear power generation.
